Mr. Giovanni Deng, a 56-year-old from Sudan, went from being carefree to bedridden in just a matter of weeks. He shares his success story of heart transplant by Dr. K R Balakrishnan Fortis Malar Hospital Chennai, India.
“I was active. Then, in December, I went for my annual physical checkup as I was out of breath walking up a flight of stairs and thought I just wanted a puffer. Instead, I found myself in cardiac intensive care with a diagnosis of myocarditis: Only 30 percent of my heart was working. With the aid of now, only 13 percentage of my heart was working. My doctor in Sudan brought up the possibility of a heart assist device, or even a transplant down the road. Doctors continued to monitor my condition.
Let’s focus our attention on heart disease, which is causing significant havoc globally and in Sudan as many people continue to die suddenly from heart attacks. Indian health care gives enough to encourage Sudan’s who suffer from heart problems to get treatment in a world class facility. It would not be so draining on pockets compared to overseas travel for a bypass operation.
With many surgeons to choose from around the world, I did a lot of research on Google to determine where I can get the best care during heart transplantation. After lot of research I came across Dr K R Balakrishnan cardiologist who is India's best heart transplant surgeon who has a lot of experience. He has successfully completed more heart transplants than most heart surgeon around the world and he performs numerous research studies which would apply to Fortis Malar Hospital. I did a lot of praying on this one. I ultimately decided that Dr K R Balakrishnan Fortis Hospital Chennai was the surgeon I needed for my heart transplant surgeon.

For the next eight weeks, I was in the CICU. On September 28, a suitable donor heart became available and the next day I received a heart transplant performed by Dr K R Balakrishnan cardiologist. I was lucky sufficient to receive my new coronary heart only 8 weeks after being placed at the donor list, however a number of the recipients waiting on the list have been there for years and will be there for future years. My heart transplantation surgery was a success two days later, while I was still in the hospital. I was wanting some quiet space and privacy so that I could heal well, then I moved to an apartment near Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai , where I lived for the next two months while I received check-ups regularly every weeks. Eventually, I was able to return to my family to my home country. I became not only the first from Sudan to receive a heart transplant with Dr. K R Balakrishnan Fortis Malar Hospital; I also became the first to be able to return to my home country afterward.
Now, every six months, I must return for a heart biopsy and evaluation by cardiologist in Sudan to ensure that I do not show any signs of rejecting my new heart. My new heart not only gave me new a chance to live, it changed my lives forever. I feel so grateful that I received this greatest of gifts. I have been so blessed that a little over 1 year later. And it is a direct result of all the health care professionals at Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai and Dr K R Balakrishnan India who gave me, and continues to give me, the best possible care. I sincerely had been given the gift of life.”
